August 25, 2000, Carl Barks, the creator of Scrooge
McDuck as well as many fabulous comic-book stories,
died at the age of 99. Barks began his cartooning
career for a magazine called Calgary Eye-Opener.
A few years later, Barks went to work for Disney
Studio. Shortly thereafter, he began working in
their story department and co-worked many of Disney's
famous cartoons. Preferring to break away from
collaborative work, Barks left Disney Studio and
contacted Western Publishing, which produced Disney
comic-books. For 25 years Barks created cartoons
of Donald Duck with his friends and neighbors
in and around Duckburg (where Donald Duck lived).
After retiring from drawing the comic-books, Barks
went on to do paintings - many of which are from
his stories. His painting career lasted 30 years.
At the age of 97 Barks agreed to do a collaborative
work again...this time with Giuseppe Armani/Florence
Sculture d'Arte. "Eureka" is the magnificent result
of this collaboration. "Eureka" is the three-dimensional
interpretation of Mr. Barks' famous scene...the
moment Uncle Scrooge discovers gold...and...becomes
rich-rich-rich. "Eureka," #590-C, has a limited
edition of 3,000. The first 500 of the edition
was issued with certificates of verification signed
by both Giuseppe Armani and Carl Barks. The antics
Carl Barks created with Donald Duck and his cast
of characters is loved and admired the world over.
The reason was wonderfully summed up by Barks
himself, "I always felt myself to be an unlucky
person like Donald, who is a victim of so many
circumstances. But there isn't a person who couldn't
identify with him; he makes the same mistakes
that we all make. At all times he is just a blundering
person like the average human being, and I think
that is one of the reasons people like the duck."
